A Stillman Project, named after a character in Paul Auster's metamystery novel City of Glass, is a collaborative filtering project by Lisa Jevbratt. Visitors are asked which of three statements they agree with most, and based on their responses, are assigned a color. As the visitor moves throughout the site, he or she leaves a "trace" of color at the bottom of each page and, over time, patterns begin to emerge, showing which pages are most "popular." Future visitors can refer to a dynamic site map to find the pages most visited by those who agree (or disagree) with the statements. A Stillman Project creates an alternative mapping of the Web site based on use rather than the architecture of the site itself.
